Duke to Host National Cardio-Oncology Conference

blue heartThe Duke Cancer Network and Duke Heart Network, in collaboration with Duke Cancer Institute and Duke Heart, are hosting a national Cardio-Oncology Conference this month. Themed, "Improving Cancer Outcomes and Optimizing Cardiovascular Health," the all-day event will be held Saturday, Feb. 22, from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. at the Washington Duke Inn and Golf Club in Durham.

Activity course directors are Susan Dent, MD, FRCPC (co-director, Duke Cardio-Oncology Program, breast medical oncologist and professor of Medicine); Chiara Melloni, MD, MHS, FACC (associate professor of Medicine and cardiologist); and Linda Sutton, MD (chief medical officer for Duke Cancer Network and associate professor of Medicine). 

Duke faculty presenters include Dent, Melloni, Michel Khouri, MD (co-director, Duke Cardio-Oncology Program and cardiologist) as well as Fawaz Alenezi, MD, MSc (Cardiology); Rachel Blitzblau, MD, PhD (Radiation Oncology); Michael Harrison, MD (Urologic Oncology); Gretchen Kimmick, MD, MS (Breast Oncology); Igor Klem, MD (Cardiology); and Kevin Oeffinger, MD (Onco-Primary Care and Supportive Care & Survivorship).

Guest faculty presenters include Eileen Dimond, RN, MS (National Cancer Institute); Brian Jenson, MD (UNC School of Medicine); Jessica Scott, PhD (Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center); and Matthew Smith, MD, PhD (Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center).

Topics covered will include the patient's perspective, assessing cardiovascular risk in cancer patients, cardiovascular concerns during cancer therapy, prevention of cardiovascular toxicity, survivorship, and the future of cardio-oncology.
