DUH Ranked Best Cancer Hospital in Southeast, in Top 25 Nationally

Updated

As Duke commemorates 50 years as a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center this year, there is much to celebrate.

According to the 2022-23 U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals survey, Duke University Hospital in Durham ranks #22 on the list of Best Hospitals for Cancer in the nation and has the highest ranked cancer program in the Southeastern U.S. (North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, and Florida).

In addition, the magazine rates Duke University Hospital as “high performing” (5-out-of-5 score) in colon, lung, ovarian, and prostate cancer surgery. Duke Raleigh Hospital is rated “high performing” in lung cancer surgery.

“Every day, DCI investigators, clinicians, and staff work tirelessly for our patients — from bench to the bedside — constantly advancing patient care and support, and as a result, more and more of our patients are living with, through, and beyond cancer,” says Robin Famiglietti, PhD, MBA, FACHE, chief administrator, Duke Cancer Institute, and associate vice president and assistant dean, Duke University Health System Oncology Services. “We are very proud to be recognized locally, regionally, and nationally for the high level of care that we provide. It’s a testament to our team’s dedication to our patients and the communities we serve.”

This latest USN&WR survey, released on July 26, ranked 914 U.S. hospitals in the cancer specialty across three weighted categories: Outcomes and Experience (48.2%), Key Programs, Services and Staff (15.7%) and Professional Recognition (36.1%). Data subcategories scored included: patient outcomes (mortality) in the medical and surgical treatment of cancer; volume of high-risk cancer patients; patient experience; patient services (such as programs for hospice, pain management and palliative care); nurse staffing; advanced clinical technologies; accreditation for bone marrow and tissue transplantation; National Cancer Institute designation; and reputation. The survey only assigns numbers to the top 50 hospitals for cancer.
