Bender Named Senior Director of Finance

Steven Bender, DCI Director of Finance

Steven Bender, MBA, FHFMA, formerly senior director of finance for Florida Atlantic University College of Medicine in Boca Raton, Florida, has been named senior director of finance of Duke Cancer Institute (DCI). Bender assumes his new role with DCI today, January 6.

In his position with Florida Atlantic University College of Medicine (2015 to 2019), Bender managed all aspects of the college’s financial and clinical operations, including budgeting, forecasting and financial analysis. He was responsible for the development and administration of an operating budget of more than $50 million drawn from various funding sources. From 2012 to 2015, Bender was director of finance at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Florida, and from 2010 to 2012, he served as chief financial officer for Melbourne Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Florida.

In his new role with DCI, Bender will serve as the architect of financial reports and models, which support DCI as a blended School of Medicine and Health System operation. He will be responsible for the planning, analyses and managing of the financials. Among other things, Bender will drive sustainable business models for the academic, research and clinical operations of Duke Cancer Institute.

"In my new role, I plan to develop financial reporting capabilities that allow the leadership team to make sound decisions on the allocation of financial resources within DCI," shared Bender. "I look forward to building a strong financial team that will be responsive to the needs of the faculty and staff within DCI and will help to provide useful data and information to the functional units."

Bender received his Bachelor of Science degree from Northeastern University, in Boston, Massachusetts. He received his MBA degree from The College of William and Mary, Mason School of Business, in Williamsburg, Virginia.

He is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Group on Business Affairs (GBA).
