Making A SplAsh For Prostate & Urologic Cancer Research

Duke oncologists agree that if people think they can hit the bullseye, there’s no denying it—they’re all wet—and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Ready for a good soaking, oncologists from the DCI Center for Prostate and Urologic Cancers have signed on to take a chilly plunge to ensure breakthrough cancer research continues to move forward.

“Our Dunk A Doc extravaganza is for a good cause,” shared surgical oncologist Michael Ferrandino, MD, the event’s brainchild. “We expect this to be a fun-filled event in which our patients and our peers get the opportunity to send us down under.”

The center’s first-ever Dunk A Doc will take place Thursday, May 16, in the grassy knoll between Duke Cancer Center and Duke university School of Nursing.

The game features a dunk tank filled with approximately seven feet of water, over which, in this instance, a cancer clinician or researcher will sit on a collapsing chair. Donors, including patients, faculty and staff, will have an opportunity to throw balls in an attempt to strike a target which when hit will cause the seat to collapse and thus dunking the doc.

The event, which takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., will feature treats provided by Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers in Durham and a silent auction. Balls can be purchased in advance. Donors can also go online to schedule to throw for a specific doc. Proceeds benefit the DCI Center for Prostate and Urologic Cancers.

Dunk A Doc will be held at 20 Duke Medicine Circle on Thursday, May 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In the case of rain, the event will be held a week later on May 23. For more information, to get balls and to schedule a throw, visit dunkadoc.org.
