Duke Men To Shave The Date
Several weeks before the first of every Movember men nationwide are asked to shave the date. According to the Movember Foundation, Movember 1 is the day to “shave down and get excited about the hairy month ahead.”
“The Movember Foundation is the leading global organization committed to changing the face of men’s health,” said medical oncologist Andrew Armstrong, M.D., MSc, who has pledged to join the movement. “By growing moustaches during Movember we spark conversation and raise funds for prostate cancer, testicular cancer and other important health issues impacting the lives of men.”
Established in 2003 by 30 men living in Australia, the Movember Foundation is dedicated to accelerating breakthroughs in prostate cancer research that will benefit patients and their families. The Movember Foundation currently runs official campaigns in 21 countries.
To date the Movember community, 4 million strong, has raised $559 million and funded more than 800 programs. Last year 40 percent of the 120 million dollars raised went to support prostate cancer research.
DCI researchers have benefitted from the Movember research efforts, including Armstrong who recently received an award from the foundation.
Labeling its male supporters Mo Bros and its female supporters Mo Sistas, a Mo Bro takes action by changing his appearance by growing a moustache. A Mo Sista commits to supporting the man in her life while helping to promote men’s health. The rules are clear. No growing head starts. No beards or goatees.
“I'm passionate about this cause because too many men are dying unnecessarily from prostate cancer,” continued Armstrong. “This coming year alone, more than 80 men will die every day of prostate cancer.”
Armstrong is organizing the fundraising team, MoDukes. He is inviting faculty and staff to join and or support his team.
“We hope to raise $100,000 to help keep prostate cancer research moving forward,” Armstrong said. “But at the very least, we 'moustache' more than UNC.”
Participants raise funds by hosting do it yourself events and reaching out to family, friends and colleagues for donations. Fundraisers are eligible for prizes in several different categories.
