Executive Director Announces 2014 DCI Superstars

On Thursday, Dec. 4, Michael B. Kastan, MD, PhD, executive director of the DCI, hosted the Fourth Annual DCI Anniversary Celebration at the Duke Cancer Center. The event featured live music by the Tim Smith Trio, refreshments, giveaways, a photo booth and a drawing for an overnight package for two to the Washington Duke Inn, won by Xiomara Manon Boyce, a patient navigator with OHED.

As host, Kastan welcomed and thanked faculty and staff for their contributions and unwavering dedication to excellence. He recognized the achievements and exceptional service of three DCI staff members, who were nominated the previous month and selected as 2014 DCI Superstars.

2014 DCI Superstar Awardees

Ivey Dull, RN, clinical nurse II, Oncology Treatment Center, received the Exceptional Care award for her “extraordinary and compassionate care” for her patients. Dull is described as “providing wonderful care” even in the most challenging of situations. She is recognized for being consistently “attentive and responsive” and able to “quickly assess” her patients’ needs. She is lauded by her colleagues for honoring her patients’ wishes at all times and in every circumstance.

Neil McCarty, clinical technician III, Duke Cancer Center Laboratory, received the Exceptional Colleague award for demonstrating excellence in leadership throughout the implementation of Maestro and Beaker go-live. McCarty served as the team lead for the phlebotomists and port draw nurses. “His efforts were impressive as measured not only by the operational enhancements he developed, but notably by his positive, calm demeanor,” wrote his nominator. McCarty’s colleagues describe him as being dedicated to his patients, consistently striving to enhance the patient experience.

Susan Boulton, RN, assistant research practice manager, Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center, received the Lifetime Achievement award for her “dedication to work with great tenacity.” “If that tenacity could be bottled and sold, she would be a millionaire,” wrote her nominator. Boulton is also noted as having “laser-like focus” as it relates to the safe delivery of patient care. She is known for advocating not only for her patients but also her team and the ethical management of clinical trials.
