"Let him die. He caused it”: A Cancer Stigma Study in Tanzania
Judith Mwobobia, a Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI) graduate student under the mentorship of Brandon Knettle, PhD, and Nosayaba Osazuwa-Peters, BDS, MPH, PhD, reports on their qualitative study on cancer stigma "aimed at exploring the attitudes and beliefs about cancer held by cancer patients and the community around them."
The research was conducted in Tanzania with pilot funding from DGHI. 70% of all global cancer deaths originate from Africa, and some of the top culprits, which can be linked to cancer stigma, are late presentation and discontinued treatment.
