Harpole Named Distinguished Professor Cancer Research
Duke Cancer Institute member David Harpole Jr., MD, has been named the David George Barth Geller Distinguished Professor for Research in Cancer. He is one of three Duke Surgery faculty members to receive an endowed professorship this year.
Harpole is a professor in the Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery and a thoracic surgeon specialized in esophageal cancer surgery, lung cancer surgery, and minimally invasive thoracic surgery. The award will support his ongoing translational and clinical research in lung cancer.
“I have been fortunate to have had numerous mentors in both translational and clinical science at Duke, who fostered my career and allowed me to have an active cancer laboratory effort supported for nearly three decades,” said Harpole. “This award will allow continued support for the translational and clinical research efforts in the development of novel therapies for thoracic malignancies that are the largest cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality in the U.S.”
