Zhao Zhang, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacology & Cancer Biology, has been named a 2021 Pew Scholar in the Biomedical Sciences. He is one of 22 scholars (early-career junior faculty) nationwide this year to receive this four-year, $300,000 grant award. He studies the long, repetitive sequences of DNA in the human genome called transposons, or ‘jumping genes’ that ‘jump’ around in the genome making changes and enabling innovation and evolution but also illnesses, like cancer.
