New MedOnc Leadership in DCI Wake County

Michael D. Spiritos, MD, the chief medical officer for Duke Raleigh Hospital and James Abbruzzese, MD, chief of the Division of Medical Oncology in the Duke Department of Medicine, announced yesterday that Neeraj Agrawal, MD has accepted the role of director of Medical Oncology for Duke Cancer Institute in Wake County, effective March 15.

Agrawal relieves Spiritos who had served as interim director since July 2017.

Agrawal has been a member of the Medical Oncology team at Duke Health since October 2014 and has been a practicing medical oncologist in Wake County since 2004. Board certified in medical oncology and hematology, Agrawal specializes in gastrointestinal (GI) related cancers and has been instrumental in the development of Duke Cancer Institute's GI cancer program in Wake County. 

In this role, Agrawal will be responsible for providing clinical oversight in Medical Oncology as it relates to the further development and growth of our Duke Cancer Institute locations in Wake County.

"He will partner with Duke Raleigh Hospital, Duke Cancer Institute, and the leaders of DCI's 11 sub-specialized cancer Disease Groups to further develop and support DCI's multi-disciplinary medical oncology practices, enhance our clinical research efforts, and increase educational opportunities for trainees," said Abbruzzese.
